ART CURIOSITIES BOLOGNA
Bologna, named by UNESCO "Creative City of Music" in 2006, has a long and ancient musical tradition.
The art of violin-making, interpreted properly as the construction of string musical instruments, has always been one of the major craft activities of Bologna and the very expression of its musical vocation.
The origins of this craft tradition in the area of Bologna date back to the Middle Ages: already at the end of the fifteenth century, in the center of Bologna, there were several luthier shops, although it is necessary to wait until 1508 to find the first document in which it explicitly speaks of a society among luthiers. Still today, the Bolognese violin making industry has a leading role, not only in the Italian production scene, but in the international one.
Some of them joined and, with the support of the Accademia Filarmonica, they founded the "Gruppo Liuteria Bolognese", affiliated to the Associazione Liutaria Italiana: their objective is to propose themselves as continuators and heirs of the ancient Bolognese violin making tradition, aware of the need to develop and promote initiatives aimed at enhancing and recovering their specific cultural and professional heritage.
Our Art Hotel Commercianti has been the dwelling of a famous master luthier to whom a room has been dedicated. He was a rich and famous cabinetmaker and luthier of Bologna who, left alone, chose to live for more than twenty years in our Hotel. Talking about more recent times, another important figure for the musical panorama of Bologna is Lucio Dalla; today his city remembers him every day along Via D'Azeglio, the street where Lucio Dalla lived and where some of our apartments are located. In fact, in 2018, the Christmas lights of Via D'Azeglio made the tour of the web citing the most beautiful verses of "L’anno che verrà", one of his most famous songs.
Currently the house from which the songwriter loved to watch San Petronio (and the stars), is managed by the Foundation born after his death and there is a project of guided tours in the apartment-museum of the singer-songwriter. Other songwriters worthy of mention who have interfaced in the Bolognese music scene, finding in it source of artistic inspiration, are Gianni Morandi, Cesare Cremonini, Samuele Bersani, Luca Carboni and Vasco Rossi.
